Lesson 3: Target Audience
Learning Objectives:
- Learn why finding a Target Audience is important
- Learn how to find your Target Audience
- Learn how to “niche down”
Assignment:
Who do you want to reach? Write down your Representative Customer. It may help to think about what you enjoy or need help with. If you need help doing something, chances are others do too. Use yourself as your own case study: what do you need help doing? what are you frustrated by?
Here’s an example of how I niched-down four levels (got more specific):
Level 1: Moms with students.
Level 2: Homeschooling moms with students.
Level 3: Homeschooling moms with elementary and middle school students.
Level 4: Homeschool moms – with elementary or middle school students – who believe in equipping their students to create and change lives.
I had to answer these questions:
- Target audience? (homeschool moms)
- What makes this homeschool mom unique?
- What does this homeschool mom believe and value?

This article may help you: “Know Your Target Audience: 10 Questions to Ask”.
Once you find a target audience, you must understand what they need, what they believe, and how they think. These questions may help you:
- Who are the people that need what you have to offer?
- What problems do they have? What are their pain points?
- How are they currently solving these problems?
- What is their decision making process like?
- Who influences them?
You may need to ask a few people in your target audience these questions. Write down their answers. Understanding your target audience will help you reach and communicate with them more effectively.
