He built a shack on someone else’s property. Thoreau in the book never mentions who this was. It was his friend and former employer, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Early readers had no way of knowing this.
The shack was about two miles from his mother’s home. She did his laundry for him while he lived in the shack. He went back to live with her after his 26 months in “the wild.” He was the classic mamma’s boy. He never married. He lived with her instead.
