Douglass lived on the plantation of Col. Lloyd. His master, Capt. Anthony, was Col. Lloyd’s chief overseer. Douglass lived for seven years in the household of Capt. Anthony. Also living in that single household was Capt. Anthony’s daughter, Lucretia. Her husband was Thomas Auld.
Slave prices in New Orleans. They fell by 60% from 1837, the year before he escaped, to 1845, the year his book was published. There was a major economic recession in 1837-38.
