Lesson 41: Helen Keller, The Story of My Life (1903)
Helen Keller was struck by a disease at 19 months in 1882. It left her blind and deaf. Through the intervention of a gifted teacher, Anne Sullivan, she was able to learn to read and speak. She became a very good writer, as her book reveals.
Three movies have been made about her, all based on this screenplay: The Miracle Worker. The first, released in 1962, earned Patty Duke the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. At the time, she was the youngest woman ever to receive it, at age 16. She starred in the lead role, as Anne Sullivan, in 1979 in a TV movie version.
