Description
This course begins a study of the history of inventions, starting with the Egyptian pyramids. It proceeds in chronological order and helps develop a sense of how inventions influenced history.
Each lesson examines one invention or an inventor, if this information is known. It explores what the world looked like before the invention came along, how it was discovered, how it was marketed (why it caught on), and what its impact on history was.
The course is unique in that history has rarely, if ever, been taught this way. It asks (and answers) such questions as these:
Why was the decline of the use of Roman roads after the Roman Empire collapsed crucial to preserving civilization?
What did the invention of stirrups in 300 AD have to do with Europe remaining Christian instead of becoming Islamic in the 8th century?
The course combines history and science to explore how inventions helped changed the world.
In some cases, an invention was discovered by separate civilizations hundreds of years apart. In one culture, it made a profound impact. In the other, it didn’t. Why not? Answers to that question are provided as the student progresses through the course. It also helps to teach the basic principles of entrepreneurship.
